This Army medic saved the lives of 9 men during the 8-day Battle of Shal Mountain

Specialist Jeffery A. Conn was the medic on top of Shal Mountain during an eight day battle to control the summit. Conn earned the Silver Star for his actions on the mountain. The men of Bastard Company 2-27th Infantry Regiment decided to finally take the mountain after insurgents used it to attack two Bravo convoys. The climb began on October eighth. A dozen men ran up the mountain to start constructing an outpost, but Conn and the rest of the platoon didn’t arrive until three days later, fighting all the way up the mountain with the platoon’s heavy weapons and special equipment. The night of October 11th when the outpost was established the insurgents attacked hard to try to keep the Americans and their Afghan counterparts from digging in.

They closed within five meters of the perimeter and opened fire with 12 machine guns and RPGs. Conn began throwing grenades and initiating claymores. When the platoon was ordered to collapse the perimeter Conn saw RPGs strike the platoon’s MK-19 and rushed in to aid the wounded. Conn’s actions are credited with preventing the southern flank from collapsing and saving the lives of 30 defenders. October 12th, the main attack again came at night. After the opening salvo Conn realized the platoon’s radio was unmanned and rushed over to send reports to HQ. Then he saw the enemy maneuvering into the outpost and Conn immediately moved to a nearby 60 millimeter mortar tube, put it in direct fire mode, and engaged the fighters killing 12 of them. Another US soldier struck two insurgents with a TOW missile. One of these men was the enemy commander. October 13th, the enemy launched it’s strongest attack after a funeral for their dead commander. Mortar and machine gun fire rained down onto the base striking the northern flank and wounding eight defenders.

Conn ran over and tended to the worst casualty, then engaged the enemy with grenades before popping smoke and pulling the wounded back to the collection point. He was able to stabilize all of his patients and once again Conn was credited with preventing the collapse of the flank. Late in the evening an air ambulance tried to evacuate the wounded. The flight medic, Staff Sergeant Cowdrey, was struck by the rotor blade from the helicopter while bringing in casualties. Conn stabilized him before loading the other wounded. He kept the injured medic alive while waiting for another medevac. Unfortunately, Cowdrey later died of his wounds. October 14th first platoon was getting relived, but while the platoon sergeant was supervising the removal of equipment ten suicide bombers ran in under machine gun and sniper cover fire. Conn made a circuit around the platoon to check for wounded. He moved to the mortar pit to help fire on enemy and threw grenades when he could. Between Conn and the platoon sergeant’s M-4, all the suicide bombers were killed before they could breach the perimeter. The enemy soon began retreating. In total during the Battle of Shal Mountain 115 enemy fighters were confirmed killed.

The US only lost two men thanks to the efforts of Specialist Conn. Like, share, and comment below. Be proud of the fighting never give up spirit of the men like Specialist Conn who have more than earned their title “Doc”..

Three German students surprise a homeless guy

Thousands of people walk by the homeless every day. Most don’t pay any attention to them, but these three students are different. One student spotted this homeless man on the street and sat down next to him. He asked to borrow his bucket… then pure magic happened. Watch as three German students make a homeless man’s day by helping him earn a bit more money, simply by sitting down next to him and playing a song. The look of surprise on the homeless man’s face is a picture.

What a nice thing to do for someone in need. If you see your fellow man in trouble, no matter what their story is, stop to help.

Man who saved 669 kids from Death Gets a Tearful Surprise on TV.

Sir Nicholas Winton, dubbed “the British Schindler” after saving 669 mostly Jewish children from Nazi death camps on the eve of the Second World War, is given the surprise of his life on television. And, well, I did not expect to see the audience do that at 0:50. Winton humbly kept his efforts a secret until his wife found scrapbooks in their attic about saving the children. Holocaust history should still be very much in the public’s mind and in our education, and it’s little moments like these that should be celebrated, not forgotten.

Paying for People’s Groceries

I always thought that it was unfortunate that Thanksgiving falls toward the end of the month, making it necessary to buy a turkey early in November, lest you run out of money later. Christmas is the same, with the added burden of buying gifts. A lot of people shopping in the latter half of the month have had to think long and hard about whether to buy food or pay some other bill.

YouTube prankster Andrew Hales of LAHWF, sponsored by Gung Ho, arranged for a few shoppers to have their grocery trips paid for, suddenly, with no warning. The response was quite emotional. -via Viral Viral Videos

Good Samaritan’s response saves people from fire

Ed: tonight a man driving through a neighborhood smells smoke and he saved lives. We go live to the scene where we are hearing from that hero. Reporter: ed, his name is Anthony and he lives around the corner. He was on his way home about this afternoon. He smelled smoke coming from the triple decker what he did was nothing shy of a hero. Overwhelmed with emotion this woman thanking the man who saved her life. He lived around the corner and on his way home when he smelled smoke. He didn’t think twice. >> I rang the doorbells because it was locked. I kick in the door and nothing was coming out. I banged on the first floor until they came out of the house.

Reporter: but this is a triple decker and Anthony wasn’t done. >> the second and third floor didn’t speak English and they refused to come out of the house. The ambulance pulled them out. Reporter: by then firefighters were on top of the flames that were mostly as you can see at the back of the building. >> make a hole, people. Reporter: it was hot and they fought hard. An effort that did not go unnoticed. This man escaped with only the shorts he had on. Watch as he pays the deed forward helping cool down a firefighter who tried to save his home. So it is a triple decker as you can see and each floor was a home. Everybody in those homes told to get out. There is no time frame on when they will able to come back — will be able to come back in.

No word on a fitter cause — on an official cause, but everybody understands that.

This Man Is Giving His Software Away For Free To Help People With Disabilities

– OptiKey is a piece of software I’ve developed for Windows. When paired with an eye tracking device it allows you full computer control and speech generation using only your eyes. It’s designed for people with motor and speech limitations, specifically people Motor neurone disease or ALS. OptiKey is free 100%, it’s fully free, fully open source forever. I decided very early on that this wasn’t gonna be a profit making exercise. I had an aunt who died about four and bit years ago from motor neurone disease, and I sort of took two things away from the whole experience. One was how horrible these sort of degenerative diseases can be. And the second thing was that the solutions available to help people communicate as they’re losing their faculties and losing control of their body, they’re either sort of insufficient or they’re very very expensive. And that struck me as being fiercely unfair and I thought I had a shot of doing something about it. The tragic nature of things like ALS and Motor neurone disease is in their extreme cases, you are locked in your bodies. It’s not called Locked-in syndrome for no reason. And software like this and solutions like this give you an outlet to the world that you might not otherwise have.

And being able to take the price tag off that, that’s the important thing. When I’ve seen it being used it just feels incredible to watch people use something I’ve created and sort of feel like I’ve given them a shot at communication they might not otherwise had. Right now it’s being translated by a group of about 25 volunteers into over 15 different languages. So the next thing you should see is is being released in French, German, Serbian, all sorts of languages coming out. What I’d really like is anyone with sort of a programming inclination out there to get on GitHub, have a look at the source code, and contribute. Because the project’s gaining momentum and I’d love everyone to get involved. So to me OptiKey is an opportunity for me to do something with my career that I’m gonna be proud to look back on..
